Assistantships
Graduate assistantships provide financial support to students, enabling them to work closely with faculty members on specific research or teaching assignments.
- These assistantships are funded either by the College or through research grants secured by the department or individual faculty members. Students awarded an assistantship at the time of admission are typically guaranteed funding for four years, contingent on satisfactory performance evaluations in their graduate assistantship duties.
- The department may also nominate a select number of highly qualified students for prestigious university-wide fellowships, such as the Presidential Graduate Fellowship, Graduate School Doctoral Fellowship, and MS Fellowship. This university-wide fellowship is awarded as a guranteed supplement to the assistantship (e.g., four years for doctoral students and two years for master's students).
- Assistantships are highly competitive and are generally awarded on a 9-month, academic-year basis. TMI Graduate Assistantships are typically one-third time (33%) positions, requiring 13 hours of work per week during each semester.
- While tuition is waived for graduate students holding assistantships, students are responsible for paying certain fees.
